How Do You Know If Someone Is Compatible With You?
Compatibility gets reduced to chemistry a lot, but chemistry is only one part of the experience.
A more useful way to think about compatibility is relational fit. Do your values work together? Do your communication styles create enough understanding? Can each person give and receive the kinds of support, affection, autonomy, and connection that matter to the other?
Some dating platforms already do a substantial amount of compatibility work.
eharmony uses a Compatibility Quiz that explores personality, values, communication style, relationship needs, interests, and priorities. Members receive a Personality Profile and a Compatibility Score with potential matches.
Harvest focuses on a more directional version of the same larger question.
Harvest separates compatibility into two directions: What I Bring and What I Need.
That matters because the two sides can be very different.
You may be naturally calm and independent while needing a partner who is emotionally expressive. You may communicate directly while needing someone who offers physical reassurance. You may bring a lot of practical support while receiving love most clearly through words.
The Five Love Languages is one familiar way people talk about those differences in giving and receiving affection.
Relationship research also supports looking beyond simple personality similarity. A 2023 study of 1,294 romantic couples found that similarity in personality traits and facets had little relationship with relationship satisfaction or life satisfaction.
Responsiveness appears to matter in a more relational way. In one study of 236 couples, people who experienced their partner as more responsive to their needs also reported greater security in that specific relationship.
Gottman’s work offers another useful perspective by focusing on what partners actually do together: learning each other’s inner world, turning toward bids for connection, managing conflict, and building shared meaning.
Harvest brings those ideas into the matching experience by showing each person how what they bring lines up with what the other says they need, in both directions.
It gives members another layer of information to use while they get to know each other.
